Lessons

with 4 comments

There are a couple of lessons I’ve learned this week that have paid off:

  • There’s really, really no such thing as a stupid question.
  • You won’t get what you want unless you ask for it.
  • It’s better to stick to radio when it comes to media interviews.
  • It’s easier to apologize after than ask for permission first.

Also, the rival union can kiss my ass.

Have a great weekend, folks.

Quite possibly need to move here.  It’s about as close to center of the universe as I can get currently.

Conference Calls

with 2 comments

I hate conference calls.

I thought I’d just get that out there.

I hate conference calls because they always occur at the most inopportune times, especially when you have folks from DC to Alaska who have to be on the same call. Inevitably, those of us in the middle (hello, MIDwest) get the short end of the stick and have to somehow manage to creatively balance our cell phone on our ear with our head at a 90 degree angle while trying to chew lunch and type up an email all at the same time.

And you can FORGET having any sort of lunch meeting.

Anyway, as much as I absolutely loath conference calls with the passion of a thousand fiery suns, I try to never miss one.

Why? Because then I might miss the gem of hearing a leader say something along the lines of “[REDACTED] is a fucking cocksucker!”

Some conference calls can be more motivating than others.

Now you know I can’t tell you exactly who was involved here on the blog for obvious reasons but let me tell you, if I told you who it involved and that it was around certain folks who might or might not be dragging their feet on health care reform, you’d all nod your heads and exclaim something along the same lines.

If you see me in the near future, ask me to retell it. It was FUCKING amazing. And spot on.

Proust Questionnaire

with one comment

Part I
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? Isolation

Where would you like to live? London

What is your idea of earthly happiness? Having good friends I can count on and having a ton of fun. Fun where I feel completely at ease and relaxed.

To what faults do you feel most indulgent? Self pity.

Who are your favorite characters in history? Elizabeth I. I love strong women.

Who are your favorite heroines in real life? Yea, I’m going to say it: Hillary Clinton. As well as Madeleine Albright.

Who are your favorite heroines of fiction? I don’t have any.

Your favorite painter? Boticelli

Your favorite musician? I can’t pick just one, sheesh.

The quality you most admire in a man? Honesty.

The quality you most admire in a woman? Honesty.

Why the previous two questions need to be separated, I have no idea. I think a better question would be: The quality you most admire in a person?.

Your favorite virtue? Honesty.

Your favorite occupation? Traveling

Who would you have liked to be? Me, myself and I. Though I sure as hell wouldn’t mind being one of the Obama girls. Can you imagine being able to travel all over the world with a parent as president in the coolest jet ever?

Part II
Your most marked characteristic? Intelligence. Some might say arrogance.

The quality you most like in a woman? Again, honesty.

What do you most value in your friends? Honesty.

What is your principle defect? I have a predilection to isolate myself. Bad habit.

What is your favorite occupation? Traveling.

What is your dream of happiness? Having enough money to be able to travel an explore the world without having to worry about funding.

What to your mind would be the greatest of misfortunes? Complete and total isolation.

What would you like to be? A professional travel writer.

In what country would you like to live? If the US can get its head out of its ass regarding health care reform, here. Otherwise, a country with real, comprehensive health care.

What is your favorite color? No favorite, really.

What is your favorite flower? Daisies.

What is your favorite bird? Bird? Huh. Don’t really have a favorite, really.

Who are your favorite prose writers? Ayn Rand.

Who are your favorite poets? Robert Frost.

Who are your favorite composers? Mozart, Haydn.

Who are your favorite painters? Boticelli.

Who are your heroes in real life? Folks who don’t give a shit about whether or not you like them or what they do. Specifically those who fight for social justice.

What are your favorite names? Catherine, Elisabeth

What is it you most dislike? Dishonesty, Greed.

What historical figures do you most despise? George W Bush. Is he a historical figure yet?

What reform do you most admire? Health care reform that will include access to affordable health care for ALL Americans. Fuck! Why is this so fucking hard for people to grasp?!

What natural gift would you most like to possess? A long fuse. Right now, mine’s about a millimeter long.

How would you like to die? Happy.

What is your present state of mind? Lonely and isolated.

What is your motto? Never ask someone to do something you would not do yourself. (This is how I get myself in over my head a lot of times. Like right now.)

smartiesGuess where I went this weekend?

Sarah Palin, part 2

with 2 comments

This piggy backs off of the last post.

The best way I’ve found to adequately describe Sarah Palin is as follows:

Think of a sheep that is being herded by an over-ambitious Border Collie constantly snapping at the sheep’s heels while the sheep tries to decide which of the 12 directions it has already darted off towards to actually GO in.  All while pathetically bleating. Over and over and over again.

This is Sarah Palin, especially at her resignation presser.

Sarah Palin

with 3 comments

I can’t believe I’m going to say this but I honestly never want Sarah Palin to fully disappear. Can you imagine how many laughs we’d never laugh if she vanished?

Yea, there’d be a lot of sighs of relief, but in some fashion, I want her to remain – even if it’s as the titular head of the Republican Party (which she’d be perfect for, actually, seeing how they’ve so effectively and narrowly marginalized themselves to appeal to folks just like her).

Here’s an awesome blurb regarding her recent announcement to resign as governor of Alaska:

“It may be tempting and more comfortable to just keep your head down [and] plod along,” Sarah Palin said Friday, in an attempt to suggest that serving her full term as governor would add to the nation’s apathy. “That’s the worthless, easy path; that’s a quitter’s way out.” Sarah Palin is no quitter. That’s why she’s quitting. — Bruce Reed, Slate.com
